Abel/VanHook Residence
For several years, Madeleine Abel and her husband searched on and off for a new home, but were unable to find exactly what they wanted. “It became our running joke that we should just hire Northwood to build a new home for us. Ultimately we decided to stay in our home and have Northwood create the additional features we wanted.”
Madeleine’s most recent project with Northwood involved the nearly complete remodeling of her kitchen. With the exception of the lower cabinets, Northwood replaced all the elements, built a new island, installed a beautiful granite countertop, and patched in new tiles to blend in with existing materials. Northwood customers since 1999, the couple had previously hired Northwood to build a screened-in porch and do a comprehensive build-out of their large basement.
Madeleine says that one of the key strengths of the Northwood team is their ability to enhance existing plans with suggestions for alternative materials and design solutions. As an example, she recalls one especially good recommendation made by a Northwood employee who was painting in the basement. “He suggested that we install wainscoting along the lower part of the basement walls. We have young children, and the wainscoting would stand up to heavy use and contact better than painted walls, as well as add a feeling of warmth throughout the basement. We agreed, and we love it. It was a fantastic solution.”
Another joke between Madeleine and her husband is that now that their most recent project with Northwood is done, they need to find another. “We loved working with them, and really became friends with individual members of the crew,” she says, adding that she and her husband have entrusted Northwood with access to their house to complete a project, even when they were out of the country. “They’re extremely conscientious, and have a great eye for design,” she notes. “We wouldn’t have anyone else do this work for us.” |
